Weddings at Norwood Hall

A Victorian country house on the edge of Aberdeen, with woodland, gardens and beautiful old interiors all within one wedding day.

A country-house wedding without leaving Aberdeen

Old-house character, a bright ballroom and seven acres outside

Norwood Hall was built in 1881 on the site of Pitfodels Castle. The sweeping staircase, ornate fireplaces and wood-panelled rooms give the older part of the hotel real character, while the Pitfodels Suite brings a brighter, open space for dinner and dancing.

The hotel sits only a few miles from Aberdeen city centre, yet the grounds feel properly tucked away. Woodland paths, gardens and the front of the house give us plenty to work with without sending you and your guests all over the place.

With 73 bedrooms on site, the whole day can stay together from the morning preparations through to the last song.

Why Norwood Hall works so well

The feel changes as you move through the house.

01

The older rooms

The staircase, fireplaces and darker wood-panelled rooms give preparations and portraits a proper sense of place.

02

Seven acres outside

Gardens, lawns and woodland paths give us different backgrounds within a short walk of the hotel.

The Pitfodels Suite

Floor-to-ceiling windows, doors to the gardens and a generous dance floor carry the wedding from dinner into the evening.

A real Norwood Hall wedding

Stephen & Faith

Stephen and Faith made brilliant use of both sides of Norwood Hall. Their ceremony took place inside the hotel before everyone headed out into the gardens for photographs and time together.

We used the front of the house, wooded paths and garden edges in short stretches, then came back inside for the speeches and dancing. Their gallery moves from soft daylight outside to the warmer, darker character of Norwood later in the day.

Another Norwood Hall wedding

Terry & Hannah

Terry and Hannah’s wedding showed another side of Norwood: woodland and gardens in daylight, then the darker wood-panelled interiors once everyone was back inside.

Shristi & Lewis

Shristi and Lewis brought a completely different look to Norwood Hall, using the woodland, the front of the house and the old interiors before a lively evening in the Pitfodels Suite.

Use the different parts of Norwood at the right time

Norwood gives us a lot of variety, but there is no need to use it all in one long session.

We can make a few photographs around the house and gardens after the ceremony, head into the woodland when the light suits it and keep the staircase or older rooms in mind if the weather turns. Later, the ballroom and darker interiors give the photographs a completely different feel.

I keep it flexible and work around what the day is already doing, so you still spend the majority of it with the people you invited.

A few useful things to know

Norwood Hall wedding photography questions

Have you photographed at Norwood Hall before?

Yes, several times. Stephen and Faith, Terry and Hannah, and Shristi and Lewis are the three weddings featured here, and I know the parts of the house and grounds that work without taking you away for ages.

Where can we take our couple photographs?

The woodland paths, gardens, front of the house, staircase and older interiors all give us something different. We choose what fits the light, weather and timings on the day.

What happens if it rains?

Norwood has strong indoor options, from the staircase and older rooms to the brighter function spaces. We can work inside first, then head out when the weather gives us a gap.

Can guests stay at Norwood Hall?

Yes. The hotel has 73 bedrooms and suites, which is especially handy for guests travelling into Aberdeen and for keeping everyone together once the evening starts.
