Weddings at Mar Lodge Estate
A brilliant Highland venue with loads to work with
Mar Lodge sits just outside Braemar with the Cairngorms stretching away in every direction. It feels grand, but it never feels like somewhere you cannot relax and properly enjoy the day.
Inside, you have dark wood, red carpet, antlers, stone and rooms with real atmosphere. Step outside and everything opens up to estate roads, heather, woodland and the River Dee. The lodge gives us completely different photographs inside and out without having to go far.
I have photographed a full wedding here and been back to photograph couples around the lodge, Linn of Dee and the wider estate. I know which places are worth making time for and how to use them without the photographs taking over the day.
If you are still looking at venues, have a look through my other wedding venue guides too.
Why Mar Lodge works so well
The lodge, the landscape and a brilliant place for a party
01
The lodge, inside and out
You have the front of the lodge, the grand staircase, carved timber and all those darker rooms with real character. They are brilliant for portraits and give us plenty to work with if the weather turns.
02
Linn of Dee and the estate
The bridge, waterfalls, river and surrounding woodland are a short drive away. When the timings allow it, this is a brilliant place for a quieter set of photographs together.
03
The Stag Ballroom
The antler-lined ballroom has a look all of its own and comes alive for a ceilidh. It gives the evening part of the gallery just as much character as the rest of the day.
A real Mar Lodge wedding
David & Rachael
An outdoor ceremony, a Jeep trip to Linn of Dee, dinner in the Craggan Room and a ceilidh in the Stag Ballroom.
David and Rachael used the estate properly. After their outdoor ceremony at the lodge, they had time with everyone before we headed out towards Linn of Dee.
The river, bridge and waterfalls gave them a breather together and added a completely different landscape to the gallery without rushing the rest of the day.
Back at Mar Lodge, dinner was held in the Craggan Room before everyone moved into the Stag Ballroom for the ceilidh and dancing.

“Mar Lodge can feel huge in photographs, but the day itself can still stay relaxed. The trick is choosing the right places and leaving enough room in the plan to enjoy them.”

Planning the photographs
Make time for the places you love, not every spot on the map
The best locations are spread out, so it helps to decide early whether Linn of Dee or the Punch Bowl is part of the wedding day, or whether we keep everything close to the lodge.
Linn of Dee has the stone bridge, waterfalls and woodland around the river. The Punch Bowl and Queen Victoria’s Cottage give us another cracking area to work with and are especially good for a small wedding or elopement.
I would normally protect one short window around the best light, then keep the rest flexible. The photographs can feel grand without making the schedule complicated.
Favourite places around Mar Lodge
Three places I would genuinely make time for
Mar Lodge covers a huge area, so I would never try to race round every spot. Pick the places that matter most, allow the travel time properly and keep the rest of the day easy.
01 · Water, woodland and rock
The Punch Bowl
The Punch Bowl is one of the strongest places on the estate for photographs. You have the water, rock, woodland and small falls all sitting close together, so we can get loads of variety without wandering miles.
It is also a brilliant option for an elopement or a very small ceremony. Queen Victoria’s Cottage is close by, giving you another bit of history and a quieter place to stop without adding loads of travel.

02 · Bridge, river and trees
Linn of Dee
Linn of Dee is worth the short drive when you want the landscape to be a bigger part of the day. The old stone bridge, river, rocks and trees all sit close together, so it does not need to become a massive detour.
I would give it enough time to enjoy rather than squeezing it in between the drinks reception and dinner. You get the bridge, river and woodland in one stop, then you are back at the lodge.

03 · The bigger view
The viewpoint over the glen
This is the place for the big view. From the hillside you can see the River Dee winding through the glen with the hills rising behind it, and it looks particularly good when the light begins to drop.
I would not rush up there just to tick it off. Give it a proper window in the plan and, when the light behaves, it is absolutely worth the trip.

The wedding morning
Pick the room with the best light and keep it clear
Mar Lodge has brilliant interiors for preparations, but the darker wood needs a wee bit of thought. Choose the room with the best window light and keep that side clear of bags, boxes and spare clothes.
The staircase, entrance and timber rooms can all work for portraits as well as the morning itself. If the weather is rough, these are not second-best options. They are part of what makes the lodge look like Mar Lodge.
If both sides are getting ready on site, leave enough separation that nobody is worrying about bumping into each other. I can move between the rooms and keep both stories covered.

A few useful things to know
Mar Lodge wedding photography questions
Have you photographed at Mar Lodge before?
Yes. I have photographed a full wedding here and returned for editorial work around the lodge and estate, including Linn of Dee.
Should we travel to Linn of Dee for photographs?
It is worth it if the river, bridge and waterfalls are important to you and the timings allow for the short drive. If not, there is still plenty around the lodge itself.
Is the Punch Bowl suitable for an elopement?
Yes, it is a brilliant option for a smaller wedding or elopement. The water, woodland and nearby Queen Victoria’s Cottage give us loads to work with, and the whole area suits a quieter day.
What if the weather is poor?
The lodge interiors are one of its biggest strengths. We can use the staircase, entrance and dark timber rooms, then head outside quickly if the weather eases.
