Weddings in Glen Clova

A proper Angus glen, a wedding venue surrounded by hills, and light that can change the whole feel of a photograph in minutes.

The whole glen is part of it

A wedding venue that never feels separate from the landscape

Glen Clova is one of those places where the drive in already feels like part of the day. By the time you reach the hotel, the hills have closed around you and everything slows down.

The cottages, kirk, outdoor ceremony space and timber reception room all sit close together, but every direction gives you something different. There are big views when you want them, woodland and stone walls when you need shelter, and quiet roads, water and open ground only minutes away.

I have photographed weddings here for Sam and Cam, Heather and Lewis, and Claire and Callum, as well as couple sessions with Jodie and Craig, Reganne and Lewis and others. The place has looked different every single time.

Why Glen Clova works so well in photographs

The venue gives a wedding day room to breathe. We can make a handful of photographs close to the hotel, then head a little farther into the glen if the weather and timings are on our side.

01

The hills do the work

A short walk is enough to change the scale completely, from an intimate portrait to a frame where the two of you are surrounded by the glen.

02

Everything is close

Morning prep, the ceremony and the reception can all happen nearby, so the photography fits around the day instead of taking you away from it.

03

The weather has character

Clear sun, low cloud and rain all belong here. A change in the weather often gives us the strongest photographs of the day.

A real Glen Clova wedding

Claire and Callum: cottages, cows, rain and a conga

Claire and Callum’s wedding moved from a quiet morning in the cottages to a ceremony with the hills behind them and cows watching from the fence. When the rain arrived during their couple photographs, they grabbed the clear brollies and carried on. It suited Glen Clova perfectly.

Later, an England match on the television somehow became a conga during the speeches. It was one of those days where the plan mattered, but the unexpected bits gave the story its shape.

At Glen Clova, the place gets involved whether you plan for it or not, the changing light, the rain over the hills and even the cows at the fence.

Couple sessions in the glen

Not just for the wedding day

Glen Clova is also one of my favourite places for a couple session. With Jodie and Craig we leaned into the mist, long grass and muted winter colours. Reganne and Lewis had bright summer light, green hills and a completely different feel. The place gives each session its own mood.

A place that changes with the season

You do not need perfect weather here

The glen can be soft and brown in winter, intensely green in summer or hidden under low cloud within minutes. I plan around the conditions we actually have, because that is what makes the photographs belong to your day.

A few useful things to know

Planning photographs around a Glen Clova wedding

You do not need to disappear for an hour to make strong photographs here. A little space in the timeline and a flexible plan are usually enough.

Keep ten minutes spare

If the light opens up later in the day, a short extra walk can be worth far more than one long session earlier on.

Bring sensible shoes

The best views can involve wet grass or uneven ground. Boots beneath the dress are completely normal here.

Do not fear the rain

Clear brollies, a quick break in the shower and dark hills behind you can make photographs with real atmosphere.

Let the day breathe

Build in enough time to enjoy your guests. Most of the story happens when everyone is simply getting on with the day.
