Weddings at Ballogie House

A country-house wedding that still feels relaxed

Ballogie is tucked away near Aboyne, with the sort of privacy that lets a wedding feel like your own from the minute everyone arrives.

The main house has loads of character, the glass marquee keeps the gardens part of the day, and there is enough space around the estate for preparations, an outdoor ceremony, drinks and photographs without everyone constantly moving about.

From my point of view, that is what makes it work so well. We have plenty of choice, but nothing needs to become a big expedition. A short wander is enough, then you are straight back to the people you invited.

Why Ballogie works so well

Everything is close, without every wedding feeling the same

01

A calm wedding morning

There is room to get ready in the main house, with good natural light and plenty of character. West Balnacraig is close enough for me to cover both sides of the morning without losing time on the road.

02

A ceremony with the hills behind you

The lawn gives you a brilliant outdoor ceremony setting, with the house nearby and a straightforward indoor option if the weather changes its mind.

03

Loads of choice for photographs

The house, gardens, old trees, woodland and nearby stone bridge all feel different, so I can choose what suits the light rather than forcing the same plan every time.

A real Ballogie wedding · Steph & John

A big day that never felt rushed

Steph got ready in Ballogie House while John and the boys were over at West Balnacraig. He arrived in his old Ford RS, their ceremony was outside with the hills behind them, and Marnie came back down the aisle before joining the family photographs.

Even with 148 guests, we kept the photography moving. The lawn made the full group photograph easy, we used the house and bridge for a short wander after the ceremony, then slipped into the woodland for ten minutes when the evening sun appeared.

Where we can go for photographs

Plenty of variety, without disappearing for ages

The front of the house and the lawn are ideal for family groups, confetti and photographs that properly show where you got married. If we want a different feel, the bridge and woodland are only a short move away.

The stone bridge

A quieter part of the day

The bridge gives us the river, old stone and a bit of space away from the main house. It works beautifully in softer light and we only need a few minutes there.

The woodland

Worth another ten minutes later

If the sun appears in the evening, the woodland is brilliant. We can nip out, use the light while it lasts and have you back before anyone starts wondering where you have gone.

“One of the best things about Ballogie is that the photographs can fit around the wedding, rather than the wedding having to stop for the photographs.”

The wedding morning

Give yourself room, then keep one bright corner clear

If you are getting ready in the house, choose the brightest room and keep a little space clear near a window. It makes a huge difference for make-up, the dress and all the smaller moments happening around you.

When both sides of the wedding party are staying on the estate, Ballogie is particularly easy to cover. I can move between the house and West Balnacraig without turning the morning into a timetable.

My best bit of practical advice is to keep bags, spare clothes and packaging together in one room. The rooms you actually want in the photographs then still look and feel like Ballogie.

A few useful things to know

Ballogie House wedding photography questions

Have you photographed a wedding at Ballogie before?

Yes. Steph and John’s wedding used the house, outdoor ceremony lawn, bridge and woodland, so I know how the different parts of the estate fit into a real wedding day.

Where are the best places for couple photographs?

The front of the house, gardens, old trees, stone bridge and woodland all work well. I choose between them based on the light, weather and how much time you want away from your guests.

What happens if it rains?

The house and glass marquee give us good indoor options, then we can head outside quickly when there is a break. We do not need a long dry spell to make the most of the grounds.

Will a large group photograph take ages?

No. The lawn gives us the space to organise it efficiently. If you give me the important family groups before the wedding, I can keep that part of the day moving too.

The venue photographs matter, but so do the reactions, the dog in amongst the flowers and the moments nobody planned. That mix is what makes the finished story feel like your wedding.
